We were sitting on a boat in Tasmania when the idea of 2upfromdownunder was first conceived with Richard & Jude – we were very excited about the route and countries we might visit but I can’t remember us discussing much about tech. Lobo and I, maybe because of our age or because we are complete numpties when it comes to these things, just thought we would get by with our old iPhone 6’s and trusty BMW satnav – how naive we were! We were happy with our simple ideas until our good friend Steve Ireland called in for a coffee – Steve is the master of all things ‘tech’ when it comes to motorbikes, he has to be as he does all the Social Media for his WOR Events! We quickly realised just how naïve we had been when Steve spoke about the need to be ‘digitally rich’ for a trip like this. Were to start: GoPro vs Insta 360, iPhone vs Samsung, Cardo vs Sena intercoms and so on - our trip is completely self-funded, so anything we chose had to be paid for! Lobo enjoys researching things so I left that to him, little did I know how much he would spend but I guess you want to capture everything you can on a trip like this. We had a good chat with Richard and Jude and decided that we didn’t need to duplicate everything, so somethings were split, Richard and Jude are going to buy a drone and we bought the satellite communicator. So what did we buy: we both like iPhones and with the new 15 pro being released during our research, that was an easy decision apart from the cost! The phone will be our principle GPS and maybe our main camera for those times off the bike, so it should be a good investment. To hold this, Lobo ordered a wireless Quadlock charger but fitting this wasn’t as straight forward as he imagined. For emergencies we bought a Garmin inReach Messenger – this is a really small, neat piece of kit that will allow friends and family to track our progress and us to send simple messages for reassurance or requests for help! For filming on the bike, we chose an Insta 360 x3 - these cameras look amazing and we are looking forward to playing around with some of the features it has. To use with the camera, we chose Rode Wireless Go 2 mics for better sound recording. We have also gone for 2 Anker power banks for charging ‘on the go’ and 2 micro SD cards for all the recording we intend to do. Lobo is happy to record a short film for our Youtube Channel and he will talk about why he chose what he did and how all these items will be used on the bike. Past films have been recorded using our phones and we were a little disappointed with the sound quality, so it will be interesting to see how much better things get with the Insta 360 and the new mics!
